A Sheffield couple were led to safety by firefighters after a bin fire spread to their flat just after midnight on Friday.

The pair, a man in his 30s and woman in her 40s, were watching TV unaware that flames from two bins had spread to a boarded up shop and then to their first floor flat on Lindsay Avenue, Lane Top.

Firefighters knocked on the couple’s door to alert them and they escaped without injury. The fire damaged their bathroom window and caused some damage inside the house.

Firefighters believe the blaze was started deliberately.
