Firefighters from Dearne and Adwick rescued a man from a bedroom window in the early hours of Wednesday after he was trapped by a fire in his kitchen.
The man, in his 30’s, woke to find the house filled with smoke, blocking his usual exit.
He dialled 999 and was hanging out of the window when firefighters arrived at the address on Barnsley Road at Goldthorpe. Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus went in to the property before the man was rescued using an extendable ladder.
It’s thought the fire started when two pans were left on in the kitchen, which was destroyed by the blaze.
Firefighters repeated advice about checking cooking appliances are switched off and having a working smoke alarm. A spokesman said: “The man had previously had smoke alarms fitted but it appears they had been taken down. Fortunately, he woke up and was able to raise the alarm but this incident could have been much worse.”
