Four rescued from kitchen fire

Bin fire spreads to flat
14 August 2010

Three children and an elderly woman have been rescued from a kitchen fire on Bondfield Crescent in the Wombwell area of Barnsley.

Crews were alerted to the incident at 8pm this evening.  Two fire engines from Dearne and Cudworth stations attended.

Control room staff gave fire survival guidance until firefighters arrived.

The children aged nine, seven and four and the woman aged 82 were all in the living room and were unable to get out of the house.  The parants had gone out for the evening and had locked the door as they left, not realising the four in the house didn't have a key.

Firefighters rescued the children through a ground floor window, while the woman was lead to safety after crews managed to break the door in to the property.

All four went by ambulance to Barnsley hospital suffering slight smoke inhalation.

The fire is thought to have started accidently in the kitchen due to the hob being left on.  It was quickly extinguished by firefighters.

Fire crews left the scene at 9:07pm.
