| Qualifications |

The Fire Service is open to people from all sections of the community from whatever background, who can measure up to the professionalism required.
If you wish to become a Firefighter you must be of good character and fulfil the following minimum requirements, which are recommended by the Home Office on behalf of Parliament.

Be at least 18 years of age on appointment. |

Be fit and able to pass a stringent medical examination and be able to pass a strength test.
Applications are encouraged from candidates who are covered by the Disability Discrimination Act (1995). These will be considered on an individual basis assessing the candidate's skills and experience to be a Firefighter and in relation to the Service's ability to make reasonable adjustments.

Be able to pass a series of educational tests examining written, verbal, numerical and mechanical skills.

Eyesight standards have recently changed and perfect vision without aid is not essential. However, suitability depends on the prescription used. An optician's report would be required as part of the process and each case would be looked at on an individual basis. No candidate would be considered within 12 months of receiving laser treatment.

Be able pass a drugs (including anabolic steriods) and alcohol test in line with our Substance Misuse Policy. |
