Spaniel dies after second water incident

17 January 2012

A dog has sadly died after the second instance of a pet falling through frozen water in Doncaster in the space of three days.

The Fire Service was alerted to reports of the springer spaniel in the lake at Cusworth Hall at around 5pm on Tuesday.

Firefighters from the Technical Rescue Unit rescued the dog from the water using a sled but it was already dead.

On Sunday, firefighters rescued a dog from an island after it had fallen into a frozen pond in Cantley.

With a further cold snap scheduled for next week, dog owners are reminded to be alert to the dangers of frozen water. The prospect of a further incident can be reduced by keeping pets on a secure lead. Should a pet fall into frozen water, owners are urged not to put their own lives at risk by attempting to retrieve them - instead, they should call 999 and seek fire service assistance.
