South Yorkshire fire crews tackled two flat fires on Wednesday night - but on both cases the occupants managed to escape before the arrival of firefighters.
The first incident occurred just after 8pm, when crews from Royston and Cudworth were called to a first floor flat in Jubilee Gardens. A smoke alarm had sounded, and the male occupant was out of the flat, and firefighters put out the fire in the kitchen area. There was significant smoke damage to the kitchen and living room area. Firefighters believe the cause was discarded smoking materials.
Just after 10.30pm, around 20 firefighters from Darnall and Mansfield Road stations were called to a converted attic flat on Staniforth Road, Darnall. They tackled a serious fire which caused extensive damage to the room and, although they prevented the fire from spreading elsewhere through the property, a water pipe burst, causing some damage.
Investigations found the cause of this fire is believed to have been electrical. The female occupant of the flat, and all other occupants of the building, were out before the arrival of fire crews.
The county's Fire Victim Support Unit attended this incident and provided support to the occupants.
