South Yorkshire Fire And Rescue

Become a Firefighter

To be a successful firefighter you need to be physically fit, articulate and confident with people in a wide range of situations. The educational tests, developed by the Home Office, are to measure verbal, perceptual and numerical skills as well as mechanical understanding.

For the physical and practical tests applicants will have their fitness tested by a variety of methods. Throughout these tests, candidates will be continuously assessed regarding reaction to discipline, ability to absorb instruction and determination.

Applicants who are successful at the assessment tests can then progress to the interview stage. Following this, successful applicants may undergo a full medical examination and may eventually be offered a place on a trainees' course. The whole process may vary in length but could take in excess of 12 months.

Not all firefighters time is taken up with emergency work, time is allocated to training, self-improvement and educational activities with the public.
