Training is a key part of a firefighter’s career development, and much of this training takes place at TDC.
The new four million pound Realistic Fire Training Building (RFTB) will vastly enhance the capabilities of the Service to meet its aim to provide firefighters with realistic training in a variety of functions, including:
• Varied scenarios using “live” carbonaceous burns
• Enhanced capabilities for PPV training, eventually moving towards “offensive” PPV use
• Varied Working at Height scenarios
• Increased opportunities for realistic Fire Development and Fire Behaviour training
• Multi function, gas controlled burns incorporating – Flashover
• Backdraught indicator door
• Realistic fire spread from basement to 1st floor
• Practical water application techniques
• Confined space training, including sewer and basement scenarios
• Roof ladder work/access via dormer and velux windows
• RTC training in a dedicated area within the compound
• High rise training via the dry riser main
• Training in the use of sprinkler systems including use of a live system and valve group
• A wide variety of options for changing the internal layout of the building to facilitate search and rescue techniques
• Potential for delivery of courses to outside bodies such as the Prison Service, Airport Fire Service, and Young Fire-fighters
A further dedicated Technical Rescue training facility is currently under construction at the new Dearne Community Fire Station. The facilities available at the Centre will enhance the practical and theoretical training facilities available on individual stations. The Training function also oversees and co-ordinates development opportunities for the individual - it acts as the conduit between the individual and potential course provider following relevant identification of training needs. Liaison and co-ordination of arrangements with other course providers is arranged by Centre staff - external course providers include the Fire Service College, other Fire and Rescue Services and colleges/universities.
