A team of intrepid South Yorkshire firefighters is aiming to hit the heights by climbing SIX of the UK’s toughest peaks in just 36 hours to raise money for charity.
The five, from Adwick red watch, will attempt the Three Peaks Challenge of Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon – stopping off to complete Yorkshire’s three highest peaks along the way.
They hope to raise a minimum of £1,000 for their gruelling expedition on June 11-12, to donate to Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity and the Fire Service National Benevolent Fund. The fundraising idea came after one of the climbers, Mick Oxley, was so impressed with the care given to his 11-year-old daughter Rebekah at the Children’s Hospital.
He explained: “Rebekah has had a rare chromosome disorder which has needed two bone marrow transplants over the last two years. She has been treated fantastically and I wanted to give something back to the hospital. We didn’t get in to run the London Marathon but this challenge is equal to it.”
The team will set off at the summit of Ben Nevis on the morning on June 11th, before scaling Scafell Pike later that afternoon. They aim to start on the three Yorkshire Peaks of Pen-y-ghent, Whernside, and Ingleborough around midnight on June 12th, finishing their exhausting 50-mile expedition around 8pm that evening at the foot of Snowdon.
