Rivelin Valley is a wholetime station covering densely populated areas which include Middlewood, Owlerton, Hillsborough, Stannington and Walkley.  The areas of Owlerton and Hillsborough also have a mixture of medium sized industrial/production sites adjacent to a number of large sporting and leisure facilities.

A large proportion of the station area is rural, which stretches to the Derbyshire border and includes Bradfield and Howden Moors.
