A Barnsley man was taken to hospital in the early hours of Friday morning after his chip pan caught fire.

Luckily the 44 year-old managed to get out of the house in Shafton and alert fire crews, who quickly arrived to extinguish the blaze.

He was taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.

A Fire Service spokesman said: “Looking at the amount of damage to the kitchen this man was fortunate to escape without serious injury.

“We would strongly urge anyone with a chip pan to replace it with a thermostatically controlled deep fat fryer”.
