Easter Cooking Fires

06 April 2010

South Yorkshire residents have had lucky escapes following three separate cooking over the Easter weekend.

On Easter Monday a chip pan started a fire on Ashland Road, Nether Edge, Sheffield. Firefighters from Central and Low Edges fire stations attended the incident, having been called at 6.34pm. All occupants had been accounted for.

On Sunday, a man in his 50s escaped conscious and breathing from a house on Westfield Road, Tickhill, Doncaster at around 6.30pm. Smoke alarms had alerted him to a chip pan fire and he was treated by paramadics at the scene for slight smoke inhalation.

And on Saturday a woman in her 20s was also treated for smoke inhalation following an oven fire in her home on Coronation Avenue, Grimethorpe, Barnsley at around 3pm.

Cooking is an everyday activity and leaving cooking unattended is a major cause of fire.

• Don’t leave pans unattended. Take them off the heat if you have to leave the room. Fire starts when your attention stops.
• Don’t use matches or lighters to light gas cookers. Spark devices are safer.
• Turn saucepan handles so they don’t stick out from the hob or over pilot lights.
• Keep the oven door shut.
