Two girls have been rescued by Firefighters from a flat fire on Abbeydale Road in the Nether Edge area of Sheffield just before 8am this morning.
The girls aged 11 and 13 were trapped in the attic bedroom after a fire broke out in the kitchen. South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue's Control room staff were in contact with the girls and gave them valuable fire survival guidance before Firefighters arrived at the scene.
Their grandfather was safely out of the property when Fire Crews arrived.
Three fire engines from Central and Mansfield Road fire stations attended the incident. Four Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the flat, two to fight the fire, and two went up to the girls and stayed with them until the fire was out. Firefighters then led the girls out of the property to safety.
Both girls were suffering from slight smoke inhalation and were taken by ambulance to the Northern General hospital as a precaution.
The fire is thought to have been started accidentally.
Watch Manager Des Omar from Central Fire Station said: "The fire crews and control staff did a brilliant job at this incident, I can't praise them enough. This was an extremely serious fire, the two girls were very scared but they did exactly what they were asked to do by Control Staff and the Firefighters."
"I would urge everyone to ensure that they have smoke alarms fitted in their properties and to check them regularly to make sure that they are working. For a free Home Safety Check by South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue, you can call our hotline on 0114 253 2314".
