Stranded Man Rescued By Fire Crews

Incident
09 April 2010

Firefighters have rescued a Sheffield man after he became stranded half way down a cliff.

The 37 year-old was trying to take a short cut from his house onto Ecclesall Road but became frightened when a rock gave way beneath his foot.

Firefighters from Central station were called to the scene, near Somerfield supermarket, and rescued the man using a fully extended ladder.

Watch Manager Steve Womack from Central fire station said the man wasn’t injured: “He’d started to make his way down the bank but realised it was very steep, and just froze.

“It’s around 40 metres from top to bottom at a very steep angle, but thankfully we were able to reach him with the ladder and bring him to safety.”

The incident happened at around 10.30am on Friday.
