Chemical Spillage Forces University Evacuation

12 April 2010

A Sheffield Hallam University building was evacuated on Monday morning after the spillage of a toxic chemical in a science lab.

Around 30 firefighters were called to the incident at the Norfolk building on Pond Street at just after 10.15.

The spillage involved 200ml of a chemical called Nipam, which can cause irritations to the skin and respiratory system.

As a safety precaution firefighters evacuated the Norfolk building, along with two adjacent buildings while the chemical was cleaned up by firefighters wearing breathing apparatus.

SYFR’s Incident Commander Andy Hayter said: “Officers specially trained in dealing with hazardous materials were quickly able to identify the chemical and we put in action a plan to deal with it safely.

“As a safety precaution it was necessary to evacuate three buildings but once the chemical had been made safe people were allowed back inside.”

Fire crews left the scene at around 12:30
