Smoke alarms fitted by South Yorkshire firefighters just three months ago have saved a Barnsley couple after fire broke out on Thursday morning.
The man, 74, and his wife, 65, were asleep in a back bedroom of the semi-detached house in Worsbrough Dale when the smoke alarm sounded at around 5.55am.
They managed to get out of the house and call 999. Fire crews from Barnsley were quickly on the scene to extinguish the blaze.
Watch Manager Damien Henderson said: “We recently visited the house to carry out a Home Safety Check and the smoke alarms have proved vital at this incident.
“Had the couple not had early warning of the fire this could have been much more serious.”
The fire, which started in another bedroom, is thought to be down to an electrical fault.
