A smoke alarm saved a man and a child from a house fire Sheffield last night, as firefighters repeated their warning about cooking late at night.
The fire service was called to the incident on Toppham Drive, Lowedges at 01.55am by neighbours, who dialled 999 and reported a man trapped in a smoke filled room.
When firefighters from Lowedges and Mansfield Road fire stations arrived on the scene, they managed to alert the occupant who had been asleep in a chair. A child was also asleep in an upstairs bedroom.
After being let into the property, firefighters put out the fire which had been caused by food left under the grill. They left the scene at 2.25am.
A fire service spokesman said: “Had it not been for the prompt actions of neighbours, hearing the smoke alarm and dialling 999, this incident could have been far more serious for the occupant and child. This incident once again highlights the dangers of cooking late at night, when tiredness greatly increases the safety risk.”
