SYFR backs Blades community day

Community Day
18 May 2010

Sheffield United’s latest community day was a huge success, entertaining more than 2,500 people at the Lane.

A jam packed variety of activities were on offer, including stalls, a fire engine and chip pan display from South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue and an agility exercise and information point from the Army.

The day also hosted boxing demonstrations, a bouncy castle and children’s activities, which were held in association with Football Unites Racism Divides (FURD) and the club’s community programme, The United Initiative.

The Blades mini football tournaments were a firm favourite, with around 240 kids involved.

Arbourthorne scooped the trophy for the U11 girls’ competition in the final against Carfield.

In the boys’ tournaments, Mundella scooped the U11s title, pipping Carfield to the post. Sharrow Kickz were the U13s winners, with Rock Youth Club coming a close second. And Streetworx All Stars took the U15 boys title.

All winners were presented with medals and trophies from former Blades player, Tony Currie.

There was also a live performance from up and coming band Searching4Evidence as part of the community day line-up. An opportunity was also given to youngsters on the Sound Kickers Project to perform.

Sue Beeley, head of community at Sheffield United, said: “The community day was a huge success with a range of activities for different age groups.

“The football tournaments were played in a really positive way and the youngsters really enjoyed being able to play at Bramall Lane. It was an ideal occasion to give young talent in the city a chance to perform.

“The younger children really enjoyed the bouncy castle and play area from SureStart - a Children’s Centre in Sharrow which provides fun activities for very young children. FURD Steetkick was also busy all afternoon!

“We’d like to thank those who supported the day, especially Ross Barnes and Oliver Burman from Sheffield Hallam University, who organised much of it as part of their work placement with the club.

“Thanks also to all the organisations who supported us on the day.”
