Residents warned to stay indoors

07 June 2010

Residents living close to a major fire in Sheffield are being advised to keep their windows and doors shut and to stay indoors.

More than 40 firefighters remain at the scene of the fire at St Phillips Club & Institute, Daisy Walk, Sheffield city centre, having been called to the incident at around 3.30am this morning.

Chemicals believed to be hydrochloric acid were discovered within the incident ground just after 8am, prompting the safety warning for local residents.

Several main jets are in use tackling the fire, which has led to the closure of Netherthorpe Road and Upper Allen Street.

Residents of some nearby flats were evacuated from their homes for several hours but have now returned.

Firefighters are expected to remain at the scene for several hours and a fire cause investigation will take place once the incident has closed.
