A Sheffield man had a lucky escape when his chip pan burst into flames in the early hours of Monday morning.
Firefighters from Central station were called to a first floor flat on Verdon Street, Pitsmoor, at around 4.30am to find the kitchen full of black smoke.
Fortunately, the resident was awake at the time of the blaze and shut the kitchen door before leaving the flat.
Watch Manager Jim Moll said: "This incident could have been life threatening, especially since there were no smoke alarms fitted in this flat. The occupant did the right thing in shutting the kitchen door, which meant only the kitchen was smoke logged. We arrived quickly enough to prevent the fire from spreading."
