Firefighters were called to an incident on Haynes Grove in the Thorne area of Doncaster at just before 7pm this evening, following reports of a man injured due to a petrol explosion.

A crew from Thorne station were quickly at the scene.  A young man in his late teens had been burning garden waste and had poured petrol over it to get the fire going, which caused the petrol to explode.

The man was taken by ambulance to the Doncaster Royal Infirmary suffering from burns.

Fire crews left the scene at 7:48pm.

Firefighters are issuing a warning to the public not to use petrol as an accelerant as it can have serious consequences.

There are some simple guidelines which should be followed when dealing with private bonfires:-

• Keep a bucket of water or sand, or a garden hose nearby, in case of emergencies
• Never use petrol or paraffin to start or revive a bonfire or barbecue; use only recognised lighters or starter fuel, on cold coals
• Keep children, garden games and pets away from the area.
• Never leave a bonfire or barbecue unattended and make sure it is completely out after use.
