CFOA urges UK sprinkler promotion

29 June 2010

The Chief Fire Officers’ Association (CFOA) believes that sprinklers save lives and it is vital that this message is received and acted upon both within and outside of the fire industry.

John Bonney, President of CFOA announced today in his speech at the UK Fire and Rescue Conference that all fire and rescue services within the UK will be issued with a briefing pack highlighting the key protection benefits sprinklers can offer. John Bonney said, 'Sprinklers are surrounded by myths and misconceptions and it is up to as the leaders of the UK fire and rescue service to provide factual information to dispel those myths. As such, we will today be issuing briefing packs to all our members to help to co-ordinate national activity and spread knowledge and awareness of the benefits of sprinklers beyond the fire sector.'

CFOA has put its weight behind increasing the use of sprinklers in the UK and there are a number of groups working to make a difference to the protection of people and premises through the use of sprinklers. CFOA position statements on sprinklers in schools, residential care homes, commercial premises and in domestic premises are publically available on the CFOA website at http://www.cfoa.org.uk/10043.

CFOA has been influential in the work on the Legislative Competence Order (LCO) which has been progressed by Ann Jones, Welsh Assembly Member for Vale of Clwyd and the Private Members Bill taken through the House of Lords by Lord Harrison of Chester.  CFOA is fully engaged in supporting both pieces of work to their conclusion.
