Road closed due to house fire

30 June 2010

Barnsley Road in Fir Vale, Sheffield was closed on Wednesday afternoon as firefighters tackled a house fire.

Crews from Elm Lane, Darnall and Central were called to the scene at around 12:40pm.

An aerial ladder platform was used to fight the fire which had broken out in the roof space of the property. No-one was inside the house at the time.

Station Manager Trevor Bernard said: “The firefighters did a tremendous job ensuring that the blaze was confined to just one property. The fire was in the roof space of the house and could easily have spread to adjoining homes.

“There was considerable damage inside the house due to the heat and smoke, and also the water used to extinguish the blaze. Firefighters carried out some salvage operations inside the house but were forced to withdraw when it became clear the property was unsafe to enter. ”

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
