South Yorkshire Fire And Rescue

CCTV on Fire Appliances

A commitment to creating safer working environments and communities is driving South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue to install integrated CCTV and Data Retrieval Technology on all its front line fire appliances.

Risk critical incident management data will be provided to operational personnel through Mobile Data Terminals installed in the crew cab of frontline fire appliances. Supported by ‘match funding’ from the Government Office for Yorkshire and Humberside, the integrated CCTV system enables the Service to target ‘Attacks’ on firefighters by aiding prevention, through deterrent and detection.  Efficiencies will also be achievable in accident investigation, mitigation of litigatory challenges, fire investigation, the informing and promoting of best practice through training and equipment evaluation, the promotion of community safety and education utilising the media.

It is anticipated that future development of system utilisation will enable SYFRS to reduce crime in the new functions outlined under the 2004 Fire and Rescue Services Act.  Potential activity includes the targeting of ‘Road Safety’ issues including the correct use of mobile phones, seatbelts and child seats through links with ANPR.
