South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue is proposing to change its start and finish times for wholetime firefighters from the current 9-hour day shift and 15-hour night shift, to equal shifts of 12 hours each. Firefighters would work the same number of hours for the same pay but these proposals would help us to make better use of taxpayers' money by improving productivity. There are also a range of other benefits such as allowing more time for firefighter training and community engagement work, and the possibility of introducing more flexible working options by equalising the shifts. The proposals are still at a consultation stage. This page contains a range on information on the proposals themselves, and why we want to change the shift arrangements. It will be regularly updated over the coming months and public feedback is welcomed by e-mailing: rosteringproject@syfire.gov.uk
