The legislation regarding fire safety regulations in your premises changed on 1 October 2006.  As the person responsible for non-domestic, industrial, commercial, leisure, educational or residential premises, it is your responsibility to make sure your workplace reaches the required standard.

Fire safety for business
In 2003, UK fire brigades attended over 42,000 fires in commercial premises, schools etc.  These fires killed 27 people and injured nearly 1,700.  Our pages give advice on how to avoid fires in the workplace and what the statutory duties are.  Why should you read them?  Because 'fire kills' and 'fire costs money'.

The costs of a serious fire can be high and afterwards many businesses do not reopen.  You can get advice about minimising fire losses from your insurer, or the Fire Protection Association.

The responsible person has a statutory duty to ensure the requirements of the Fire Safety Regulations are complied with.

It is the policy of the South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue to effectively manage fire safety and to seek a reduction in the number of fires, fire-related deaths and injuries, through the effective enforcement of Fire Safety Legislation.

We have a statutory requirement to effectively and efficiently enforce all Fire Safety Legislation for which South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue has responsibility.

Our Fire Safety Inspectors will provide information which is consistent, appropriate, transparent and timely, and the inspection of premises in regard to commerce and industry will be prioritised by risk.
