South Yorkshire Fire And Rescue Service

It's a really good idea to make a plan of what to do in case there is a fire in your home - just like you have fire drills at school.

Here's how Jane, aged 7, helped her family to make a fire plan.
  1. Jane makes sure everyone in the family talks about the best plan.

  2. She draws a map of all the rooms in the house and marks all the places where they could escape.

The best way is how Jane would normally go in and out of the house. But she also thinks about what you would do if the normal way were blocked. Imagine if both the doors were on fire, which way would you get out of the building?
  1. She makes sure that everyone knows where the door and window keys are kept, in case they have to unlock them to get out.

  2. Jane arranges for everyone to meet at the same place outside her home so her family will know everyone has made it out safely.

They all agree NEVER, EVER to go back into the building unless a Firefighter tells them it's OK, not even to rescue a pet.

And when the plan is finished, Jane and her family pretend there's a real fire and practice their plan.
