South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue were alerted to a property fire at 1.36am this morning.
Fire crews from Mexborough and Brampton stations were quickly on the scene. Firefighters using breathing apparatus entered the property and found a man on the sofa downstairs. The man was rescued and given oxygen therapy.
Firefighters returned inside and went upstairs to find a further five people in a front bedroom which included a woman and her four children aged twelve, ten, seven years and a fourteen month old baby.
The man and woman were both in their 30’s. The woman and children were all transported to hospital as a precaution.
The twelve year old boy had been woken by the smoke alarm which had been fitted by South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue and had gathered everyone upstairs into one room, he had placed pillows behind the bedroom door to prevent smoke from getting in and had alerted fire crews to their postion through the window.
Fire crews left the scene at 2.14am.
