Young Drivers See Dangers of Texting at the Wheel

South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue are inviting young drivers to come along to a free event where they can see the true results of driving while distracted or under the influence of drink or drugs.

The event, which will run from 7pm to 9pm on Tuesday 2 September, involves staff from Doncaster Fire Station and other agencies in the Road Safety Partnership, such as South Yorkshire Police, South Yorkshire Camera Partnership, Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council, Yorkshire Ambulance and local driving instructors.

It will be held at the Carr House Centre, Danum Road in Doncaster.

The event is aimed at 17 to 24 year olds, who are the most at risk from being involved in a road traffic collision.  It will highlight the dangers involved in drink and drug driving, while also demonstrating the results of texting or being on the phone while driving.

The young people will be able to test their reaction skills with the use of the Reaction Tester, which will show how their reactions change if they are being distracted by a mobile phone.

A number of car related free gifts will be given out throughout the evening.

Station Manager Shaun Pilley from Doncaster Station said:  “Some of these drivers will have only just passed their driving test.  We want to get the message across to them that being distracted while driving, or being under the influence of drink or drugs, can have terrible consequences.”
