Older people within South Yorkshire will be attending the successful Lifewise Centre at Magna, to gain valuable safety advice.

South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue in partnership with South Yorkshire Police, Trading Standards, Age Concern and local authorities will host the third ‘Crucial Crew 50+’ which has proved a great success in previous years.

The safety initiative will run for two weeks starting on Monday 8 September 2008, with around 70 people from all over South Yorkshire attending the Centre each day.

This older persons initiative is born out of the very successful Crucial Crew based at the Lifewise Centre.  Every year school children come along to Lifewise for the day and, using stage sets and interactive scenarios, the young people are taught valuable safety messages.

South Yorkshire Fire & Rescues, Older Persons Advocate, Sue Butler said:  “The aim of the event is to make life for older people living in South Yorkshire safer and to give practical advice and information on safety issues.  It is also an excellent opportunity to work with our partners in South Yorkshire Police, Trading Standards, Age Concern, Local Councils and many more.

The Lifewise Centre has been constructed as a film set to the specifications of the South Yorkshire Police and Fire.  In partnership with other local organisations, have created an interactive area where groups of people, mainly children, can be taught how to keep themselves safe by taking part in scenarios which replicate day to day situations where they could be vulnerable.  Inside Lifewise there are ‘sets’ replicating, a pub, a house, a street, a park, railway lines and bus stop.  Lifewise offers a virtual community and is one of the first such Centres to be opened nationwide.
