South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Authority is a "Best Value" Authority under the Local Government Act 1999. Under this Act the Authority has a duty to provide a quality service that is efficient, effective and economic. Best Value sets a demanding performance framework for the Authority, with the focus on continuous improvement in service to the public. To ensure that this takes place the Service employs professional personnel to carry out the following:

Advise upon the selection of services for review.

Carry out Reviews.

Provide a framework for performance management.

Publish a Corporate Plan.

Develop guidance relating to performance improvement.
- Carry out consultation and analyse results.

Liaise with other Fire Services and external agencies for the purposes of comparison and the development of best practice.
