Fire Crews Save Pigs

Firefighters from Tankersley and Penistone worked against the clock to prevent a 500 litre tank of diesel from catching fire in a barn containing 12 pigs.

A slaughterhouse, two lorries and other farm buildings were also under threat when a pressure washer which was being powered by the diesel overheated and melted the plastic feeder pipe.

Fire crews were called to the barn on Coates Lane, Oxspring at 6.40pm on Wednesday evening and quickly put out the fire, just managing to stop it from spreading to the main 500 litre tank.

Watch Manager Simon Rogers said: “The excellent work of the firefighters involved potentially saved numerous buildings. They initially attacked the fire, before using breathing apparatus to build an improvised dam to stop the tank from leaking.”

 More Mexborough Hay Fires

Hay bales were deliberately set on fire for the second evening running in Mexborough.

Firefighters spent two hours putting out five hay bales which were set alight on Harlington Road, just after 6.30pm on Wednesday evening.

The previous night they had spent another two hours putting out ten hay bales which were also deliberately set alight on Ullswater Road.
