Woman Rescued From River Don
A 27-year-old woman suffered a suspected broken ankle after falling 20 feet to the River Don.
She was the third person in a week to need Fire Service assistance after falling from the same spot on Shoreham Street, outside the BBC Radio Sheffield offices.
Fire crews were called to the scene shortly before 1.00am and used ladders to descend to the river bank and gave first aid. After the arrival of ambulance crews who put the woman’s ankle in a brace and administered oxygen therapy, firefighters used an aerial ladder platform to lift the woman to safety, before being taken to hospital.
Last week, people fell through the same spot in the early hours of both Monday and Wednesday mornings.
Couple Escape House Blaze
A Consiborough couple were woken by smoke alarms which had been fitted just three months before, enabling them to escape a fire spreading to their house.
The male and female in their 50s fled with their two dogs to their back garden in Gardens Lane at around 4.00am on Monday morning. The smoke alarms had been fitted by South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue after a free home safety check.
Watch Manager Peter Phillips said: “The activation of the smoke alarm undoubtedly saved these people’s lives and enabled them to vacate the premises unharmed.”
The fire started in the garage of an uninhabited house next door, and spread to the couple’s car port, destroying their car. The fire then continued to affect the end terrace house, causing extensive heat and smoke damage which has rendered it currently uninhabitable.
Crews from Mexborough, Edlington and Rotherham spent over two hours at the incident. An investigation into the cause of the fire is under way.
