Neighbour’s Action Aids Elderly Woman
An 84-year-old Sheffield woman was alerted to a fire in her home when a neighbour heard the smoke alarm activating.
The lady managed to escape with smoke inhalation from her home in Morland Road, Gleadless, at around 6.30pm on Saturday.
The incident took place shortly after South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue launched their ‘Lend A Hand’ campaign, asking neighbours and family members to look out for elderly residents. Six of the last ten deaths in accidental dwelling fires in South Yorkshire have involved people aged 69 or over.
In Saturday’s incident, the fire was caused by cooking materials, and was out by the time firefighters arrived. The lady received treatment at the scene before having a precautionary check at hospital.
The ‘Lend A Hand’ campaign urges neighbours and family members to help arrange for SYFR to carry out a free home safety check on people’s homes, fitting free smoke alarms where required. Neighbours can also help by testing the smoke alarms once a week to ensure they are working properly.
