Crews Praised After Plastics Fire

More than 25 firefighters tackled a large blaze at a plastic recycling firm on Wednesday evening after fire broke out just before 9pm.

Crews arrived at Rainbow Plastics on Stone Lane at Woodhouse to find bins and an industrial skip containing plastic on fire with flames shooting up to 40 feet into the air.

Workers arriving for their night shift were kept back while firefighters fought the blaze to prevent it spreading to the main building.

Watch Manager Chris Kelland said: “Our firefighters did an excellent job containing the fire so it didn’t reach the inside of the building. Fortunately there was just a small amount of heat damage to the outside of the building and the roof.”

The crews involved in the incident were from Mansfield Road, Central, Darnall, Aston and Edlington.

The fire is believed to have been started deliberately.

Flats Evacuated After Gas Leak

Around 35 people had to leave their properties on Wednesday evening after a gas leak was discovered inside a Sheffield flat.

Firefighters and police were called to Motehall Road, Manor at around 8pm after reports of a strong smell of gas in the area.

A leak was discovered inside an empty block of flats but a neighbouring block was evacuated at a precaution while the scene was made safe and gas board officials were called.

Chip Pan Blaze in Barnsley

Smoke alarms fitted by SYFR saved a woman and her toddler son after their chip pan caught fire on Wednesday morning.

The pair managed to safely exit the property, on Kathleen Street in Goldthorpe, after the alarm alerted them to the blaze.

Fire crews wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the fire, which caused smoke damage and some fire damage to the kitchen.

Crew Manager Dave Saif from Mexborough Station said: “Fortunately they were able to get out of the property and raise the alarm so the fire wasn’t as serious as it could have been. This demonstrates how invaluable smoke alarms are.”
