Barn Fire In Barnsley

Over thirty firefighters attended the scene of a large barn fire in Ardsley on Wednesday evening where bales of hay and bags of fertiliser were on fire.

Crews from Barnsley, Brampton, Royston, Tankersley, Mexborough and Central were called to the blaze at Tyershall Farm, just off Doncaster Road.

On arrival firefighters discovered around a hundred bales of hay and thirty bags of ammonia nitrate fertiliser were involved in the fire.

Watch Manager Nigel Bailey from Barnsley Station said: “We needed to first find out if it was safe to use water on the fertiliser, and also how to apply it. We used spray to extinguish the fertiliser fire, and then focused on the hay.”

The family living in the farmhouse were asked to leave the property until the fire was extinguished, and with the help of the farmer, firefighters prevented the blaze spreading beyond the haystack.

Fireghters from Barnsley returned to the scene on Thursday morning to check the fire hadn’t re-ignited, and an investigation will be carried out to establish the cause.
