Man Saved By Smoke Alarm
A Doncaster man was woken by his smoke alarm just after midnight (Saturday 5th April) after fire broke out in his bedroom.
The man, in his 30s, called 999 and was given fire survival guidance by a member of South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue’s Control staff.
He was able to get out of the property in Wheatley Park after smashing a kitchen window.
Firefighters from Doncaster and Edlington then arrived and extinguished the blaze wearing breathing apparatus.
The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental, caused by a cigarette, and the man suffered smoke inhalation and cuts to his hand.
A spokesman for the Service said: “The man had smoke alarms fitted by South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue, and they obviously proved invaluable in this case. Anyone can register for a free home fire safety check, and free smoke alarms if required, by calling 0114 253 2314.”
