Elm Lane is a wholetime station which covers a densely populated residential area (38,282 dwellings) with some industrial risks.  The two largest risks in this area are the Northern General Hospital and the Transco Gas Holders on Barrow Road.  Other risks include the Blood Transfusion Centre and Concord Sports Complex.  The station appliances also support neighbouring stations at risks such as the Meadowhall Shopping Complex and Swann Morton Ltd.
