A group of young people from a Special School in Barnsley have marked the end of a seven week firefighter training course with a passing out parade.
The year 11 pupils (15/16 year olds) from Greenacre School have been learning basic firefighting skills from firefighters at Barnsley station, including using different apparatus, basic first aid and rescues from road traffic collisions.
Firefighters also offered fire safety advice to the young people, who were presented with certificates of achievement at the end of the programme.
The course ended with a demonstration by the participants infront of family and friends (Tuesday 4th March) where the young trainees displayed some of the skills they learned as part of the course. Simon Dillon, Station Manager at Barnsley Station said: “It was a fantastic display and a real credit to their determination and enthusiasm. They took part in a scenario where a young child was trapped by fire, the team having to lay out two lines of hose and provide a protective curtain of water to allow the daring rescue to take place.
“All the pupils and instructors have worked incredibly hard to put on what has been a challenging but extremely rewarding course.”
