South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue has three Incident Support Units, each with its own specialist equipment.
Water Rescue Unit Designed for water rescue, this unit carries various items of equipment designed to rescue people stranded in water or on ice. It carries on the roof an 8 person inflatable boat and, within the vehicle, floating pathways, sand lance (for releasing people trapped in mud) and animal extrication equipment.
Heavy Rescue Unit Designed to provide specialist heavy rescue capabilities to support and supplement the Rescue Pumps, it carries heavy jacking, cutting and trench collapse equipment.
Pollution Containment Unit This vehicle also carries an inflatable boat which can be used to deploy barriers on waterways to contain chemical spillages. It also carries a special water driven suction pump to transfer chemical and other spillages into special containment units.
All of the above vehicles have further roles: all three are capable of providing Community Action Advice following incidents, and the "Heavy Rescue" and "Pollution Containment" units are fitted with state of the art Command and Control computers and communications facilities which are used to facilitate command of Major Incidents, acting as a forward command post for Fire Control and senior officers.
