Blaze

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue is committed to delivering excellence in Fire Safety and Intervention for the people of South Yorkshire. To achieve our aims we have produced a scheme of work which links fire safety awareness to the ideals and values of citizenship. Through our schools education policy, we have adopted a national initiative which is backed by the Home Office and supported by the Education Authority. The Brigade delivers fire safety messages to schools via "Blaze" which is relevant to the following Key Stages:

Key Stage 1, which is aimed at 5-7 year olds.
Key Stage 2, which is aimed at 7-9 year olds.
Key Stage 3, which is aimed at 9-11 year olds.
"Backfire", which is aimed at year 7 pupils.

Each key stage will have lesson plans with specific subjects aimed at fire safety.
"Blaze" is also appropriate for inclusion in a Personal and Social Development course.

Overall Aims of "Blaze"
For pupils to make progress in the following aspects of Citizenship:-

  • Becoming informed citizens
  • Developing skills of enquiry and communication
  • Developing skills of participation and responsible action
Each section of the "Blaze" Scheme of work is now described to include:-
  • Specific learning objectives and ideas
  • How it links to a Study for Citizenship
  • Ideas for extension work
