South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue are seeking to recruit an Apprentice Motor Vehicle Craftsperson (Mechanic). The successful applicant will be based at our modern Transport Workshops at Eastwood in Rotherham.

The apprentice will be part of a busy team that repair and maintain the fire appliances, vehicles and plant of South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue. You will learn a full range of disciplines in the repair and maintenance techniques of the Fire Service Transport fleet. With both practical and theoretical training you will be expected to learn and develop the necessary technical skills and safe working practices required by the role and fully integrate into the workshop team.

This is a unique opportunity for anyone that has a career based objective and an interest in the repair and maintenance of Fire Service vehicles or vehicles in general. This 2 year programme will enable successful candidates to acquire a recognised qualification (City & Guilds NVQ Level 2 in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance and Repair) whilst gaining work experience.  Successful candidates will undertake study one day per week during term time at Rotherham College.

We currently anticipate that the apprenticeship programme will commence in June 2012. To be eligible to apply, you will have a minimum of GCSE Grade C or above in Mathematics and English (or equivalent). SYFR is supporting developmental apprenticeship programmes in order to increase opportunities for less skilled individuals to gain employment and work related qualifications in line with its public sector duties. As such, candidates with Level 4 qualifications or above in any subject will not be eligible to apply.

SYFR is an equal opportunities employer and positively encourages applications from suitably qualified and eligible candidates from all areas of our community. As we are currently under represented by black and minority ethnic groups, women and younger age groups, we would particularly welcome applicants from these groups.  All applications will be considered and appointments will be made on merit.

The closing date for applications is Wednesday 16 May 2012 and these should be returned to South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue, Organisational Development, 197 Eyre Street, Sheffield, S1 3FG.
