A smoke alarm is a special machine like an electronic nose that smells smoke
and can save your life.
In only a couple of minutes even a small fire causes horrible, thick, black,
poisonous smoke.
While you are asleep, if it smells any smoke it makes a really loud noise
and wakes everyone up. This gives you the chance to escape safely before the
fire gets too big and makes too much smoke for you to get out.
 
You should be able to find them fixed to the ceiling on each floor of your
home.
