Elm Lane is a wholetime station which covers a densely populated residential area (38,282 dwellings) with some industrial risks. The two largest risks in this area are the Northern General Hospital and the Transco Gas Holders on Barrow Road. Other risks include the Blood Transfusion Centre and Concord Sports Complex. The station covers Lane Top, Shiregreen, Shirecliffe, Longley, Parson Cross, Ecclesfield, Firth Park, Grimesthorpe and Blackburn. Its appliances also support neighbouring stations' risks such as the Meadowhall Shopping Complex in Darnall and Swann Morton Ltd in Rivelin.

Elm Lane has its own Arson Intervention Cycle team and Young Fire Cadets who train on Monday evenings.
