The Fire Service is open to people from all sections of the community, from whatever background, who can measure up to the professionalism required.
If you wish to become a Firefighter you must be of good character and fulfil the following minimum requirements, which are recommended by the Home Office on behalf of Parliament.

Be at least 18 years of age on appointment. |

Be fit and able to pass a stringent medical examination. The following conditions will exclude entry on medical grounds:
Epilepsy or a history of faints, fits or blackouts; asthma, chronic bronchitis or other lung diseases; diabetes, high blood pressure; psychiatric or nervous instability or illness; lack of sense of smell (anosmia); menisectomy ie. removal of cartilage from knee joint; back injury and/or recurring musculo-skeletal disorders, particularly of the lower back and/or knees; skin disease eg eczema, psoriasis, if chronic and extensive; recurrent or chronic disease of the ears or nasal, medical conditions such as hernia or varicose veins should be remedied before application is made.

Be able to pass a series of educational tests examining written, verbal, numerical and mechanical skills.

Eyesight standards have recently changed and perfect vision without aid is not essential. However, suitability depends on the prescription used. An optician's report would be required as part of the process and each case would be looked at on an individual basis. No candidate would be considered within 12 months of receiving laser treatment.

Be able to pass a strength test.
