During 2007, SYFR adopted an Environmental Policy that recognised that many activities we undertake at the Fire Service have a negative impact on the Environment. Since then we have been gradually implementing initiatives that seek to minimise harm to the environment and reduce the production of Co2, the so called green-house gas that has been identified as a key contributor to global warming.
Following a carbon foot-print assessment of the organisation, the Service has set an initial short-term target to reduce Co2 emissions by 10% during 2009/10 with a further 10% by 2012.
Cycle to Work Scheme
One of the initiatives set up is the Cycle to Work Scheme (C2W). This scheme will provide employees with the opportunity to select a bicycle for use to and from work, which will then be purchased by SYFR and rented to the employee for a set period.
At the end of the scheme the employee has the opportunity to purchase the cycle at a low residual value. The benefit of the scheme is the tax savings that are achieved.
