Mirror warning after two premise fires

Two premise fires this week are believed to have been caused by mirrors on windowsills which had concentrated the sun’s rays, causing nearby curtains and towels to catch fire.

The two incidents were both on Wednesday (7 February) afternoon on Millhouses Lane, Sheffield and Osbourne Road in Sheffield. Luckily no-one was injured in either incident.

Firefighters are now warning residents about leaving mirrors near windows and ask that they are placed away from direct sunlight.

  • Keep concave mirrors and crystal or glass objects away from sunny sills and flammable materials.
  • Fit at one smoke alarm on every floor or your home and test them every week to make sure they work.
  • If you do have a fire, close the door on the blaze, get out stay out and call 999
