Children are naturally inquisitive and this can sometimes lead to accidents in the home. You can keep your children safe by following some simple safety tips:
• Keep only one lighter or box of matches in the house.
• Keep matches and/or lighters safely out of reach of your children.
• Never leave children alone in the house.
• Explain that fire is dangerous and should only be dealt with by adults.
• Secure garden sheds and garages, as children may hide in them to play with fire.
• Teach your children to STOP, DROP and ROLL in case their clothing should ever catch fire. They need to stand still, drop to the ground and then roll to smother the flames.
The ONE TO ONE scheme is run by South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue to help children experiencing problems associated with fire.
