Older people are at greater risk from fire compared to other age groups in South Yorkshire.
It is not just the threat of death or injury as a result of fire that makes older people vulnerable. Even a small fire can cause someone to lose confidence in his or her abilities to remain safe. Older people can also be less mobile, and therefore less able to escape a fire.
In order to reduce this risk, our elderly persons' advocate works alongside health and social care services, plus other public and voluntary services to help promote the message of fire safety within the home.
Many elderly people can benefit from having a free home safety check and free smoke alarms fitted, including those for the hard of hearing, where necessary. For more information or to arrange a free home safety check, please contact Sue Butler at South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue on 0114 253 2413.
