Sprinkler Advocate

Whilst sprinklers have been used for the protection of property such as mills, factories, warehouses and department stores for well over 130 years there is now a growing recognition of their effectiveness in improving levels of life safety in other types of buildings.  South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue recognises the value of sprinklers in enhancing levels of safety for occupants and has appointed a Sprinkler Advocate to work with the public to provide guidance and information as necessary.  To find out more please click here.

Advocate for the Elderly

Many older people are at greater risk from fire compared to other age groups in South Yorkshire.  It is not just the threat of death or injury as a result of fire that make older people vulnerable, even a small fire can cause someone to lose confidence in his or her abilities to remain safe.  In order to reduce this risk, the elderly persons' advocate works alongside health and social care services, plus other public and voluntary services to help promote the message of fire safety within the home.  Many elderly persons can benefit from having a free home safety check and free smoke alarms fitted, including those for the hard of hearing, where necessary.  For more information or to arrange a free home fire safety check, please contact Sue Butler at South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue on 0114 2532978.  To see our Older Persons Strategy click here.

Black Minority Ethnic Advocate

Although statistics show that BME group do not suffer from a greater number of fires than the general population, SYFR does recognise that BME communities experience a double disadvantage.  They are disproportionately concentrated in deprived areas and experience all the problems and risks from fire hazards that affect other people in these areas.  Also the people from BME communities face language and cultural barriers in gaining access to information and services, making it difficult for them to follow fire safety guidelines and protocol.  By being in contact with BME organisation and community leader, delivering the message of fire safety and providing them with free smoke alarms and free home fire risk assessments will benefit its members greatly.  If you would like to find out more about the work undertaken, or to arrange a free home fire safety check, please contact Hussain Ibrahim at South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue on 0114 2532977.

Advocate for People with Disabilities

With varying degrees of disabilities, the potential risks and requirements are going to differ depending on the individual.  Residents, who may have sight impairment, hearing disabilities, confined to a wheelchair or housebound, are especially vulnerable from the effects of smoke and fire.  It is important to identify these risks and help encourage fire safety within the household to every resident, regardless of their disability, which is why South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue have appointed an advocate to work in partnership with other agencies and social groups.  The advocate can arrange and carry out free home fire safety checks, plus the free installation and testing of domestic fire alarms, even for those who are hard of hearing.  If you would like to find out more about the work undertaken, or to arrange a free home fire safety check, please contact Julia Ball at South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue on 0114 2532976.  To see our Strategy for Disabled People click here.
